Description
Overview of the medicine
Evoloxin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the type and severity of infection.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients with normal renal function. Dosage should be adjusted based on renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 20-49 mL/min, 250 mg once daily. For creatinine clearance 10-19 mL/min, 250 mg every 48 hours.
How to Take
Take Evoloxin tablet orally, with or without food. It should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid and not crushed or chewed.
Mechanism of Action
Evoloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bactericidal effects typically begin within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine, with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing in most cases.
Absorption
Rapidly and well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver (less than 5% of the dose).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to evoloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- •History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use.
- •Epilepsy or other seizure disorders.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsive seizures when co-administered with fluoroquinolones.
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring monitoring of INR.
Antacids (containing magnesium or aluminum), Sucralfate, Iron/Zinc supplements
Can significantly reduce evoloxacin absorption. Administer Evoloxin at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In the event of an acute overdose, gastric emptying and general supportive measures are recommended. Monitoring of ECG for QTc prolongation and renal function is advised. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing evoloxacin from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Evoloxin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when Evoloxin is administered to a nursing woman.
