Description
Overview of the medicine
Livodel (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is a bile acid used to dissolve gallstones and treat various liver diseases, particularly primary biliary cholangitis (PBC).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For gallstones: 8-10 mg/kg/day, usually divided into 2-3 doses. For PBC: 13-15 mg/kg/day, divided into 2-4 doses.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but monitor liver function.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment required as it is not significantly renally excreted.
How to Take
Take with food, usually in the evening or divided into 2-3 doses daily.
Mechanism of Action
Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA) works by altering the composition of bile, reducing the cholesterol content by inhibiting its synthesis and secretion, which helps in dissolving cholesterol gallstones. It also has cytoprotective, anti-apoptotic, and immunomodulatory effects on hepatocytes, thereby improving liver function in various cholestatic liver diseases.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable; gallstone dissolution may take several months.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces after hepatic metabolism and enterohepatic recirculation.
Half life
3-5 days
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (approx. 90%). Peak plasma concentration is reached in 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to conjugated forms (glycine and taurine conjugates), then secreted into bile. Undergoes enterohepatic recirculation.
